MOIRA JARVIS - BIOGRAPHY
“Yet our personal relatioship to history and place forms us, as individuals and groups, and in reciprocal ways we form them”
Lucy Lippard 1997
Trained at Cambridge Art School, with a degree in textiles, I initially worked as a designer selling in New York and Paris. After having children I qualified as an art teacher and worked for many years as head of art in a London Comprehensive School. I completed and MA in Fine Art (painting) at Wimbledon College of Art (UAL) and now work in one of the Cannizaro Park Studios near Wimbledon Common.
Drawing, painting and prints are influenced by my earlier career as a textile designer and an ongoing enquiry into the different histories of women artists.
Recently I have been looking at cycles in the natural world. This has included the history of ancient countryside, its hedges, its craft of willow weaving, charcoal burning, fire and renewal. Installations include charcoal and willow structures at All Saints Church, West Dulwich and a collaboration with French artists exploring the democratic life of the female honeybee.
I have also worked with SLWA on the project Women In Democracy and took part in the performance A Public Airing across South London and at Peckham Platform.
